Bad Bad Craig live at Mutant Music 15/01/09

Last month at Mutant Music, Bad Bad Craig compered the evening with sparkling repartee and Hollywood reminisces. He also kicked the evening off with a wee acoustic set of Bad Bad Men numbers, including a couple of brand new tracks and a sexy cover version.

Here he talks us through the songs, which you can download soundboard bootlegs of for free, simply by clicking on the titles. Are you sitting comfortably? Then he’ll begin…

Gallows

I decided to open with this one as it’s a mainstay of the Bad Bad Men live set and at least 13 of our 14 known fans seem to like it! I’ve never officially been to prison unlike the rest of the band (Bad Bad Jen in particular) so it was their recollections that inspired this tune to a degree. Before the end section kicks in, I usually like to discuss dinner plans with drumming wizard Bad Bad Ryan aka: She-Ra – Princess of Power, aka: Mr Tigger but he was sadly not in attendance that evening, this made me sad!

Blood

This is a new Baddies tune and I’m not 100% sure I remembered all the words but it seemed to go well! Bad Bad Stewi (he of the otherworldly blonde locks) pointed out that a tiny part of it bares an alarming resemblance to a Tina Turner song hence the intro! I’m sure Tina won’t mind too much! Tina, if you’re reading this, let’s get a coffee and we’ll discuss financial compensation!

Brother, When Our Troubles Are Over

Another new one, written for a friend going through a rough time! Not gonna make any jokes in this paragraph, keep reading though…

Anna Maria’s Bones

Man, The Baddies have been playing this one for donkeys ages, the ladies seem to like it though and that’s obviously a good thing so it remains in the set. I played it on this particular night because I realised that I can’t actually play as many of our tunes on guitar as I thought I could! This rendition perhaps missed the sultry tones of young Bad Bad Gareth of Hunter but he was there in spirit and coincidentally he was there drinkin a lot of spirits not 10 ft from where I was playing!

Call The Shots*

Please believe me, this is entirely free of irony, I worship at the feet of the song writing talent behind those goddesses of modern pop; Girls Aloud, they have awesome tunes! I like to think that Cheryl writes them all while living rough in a little log cabin in Wisconsin a la Bon Iver but I’ve a feeling that’s probably not the case! Nonetheless this is a beautiful treatise on the politics of love!

Bad Bad Craig

* Sadly our tape cut out at an inopportune moment during this song, but we figured you’d want to hear what we did get.

Bad Bad Craig is a Xenomaniac and singer/mandolinist/self-styled baddest of the Bad Bad Men. Bad Bad Men are recording brand new studio material very soon and will also play with Sparrow And The Workshop, The Second Hand Marching Band and Blood Of The Bull at Mutant Music @ The Flying Duck in March.

Chris Devotion / Mutant Music : Bossanova

Posted in Bad Bad Men, Bootlegs / Free Downloads, Mutant Music, The Dirt, The Elvis Suicide on January 6, 2009 by Admin

The one and only Chris “Big Chris” Devotion helped us out at our Springsteen tribute night in December, taking on compere duties and playing a short set of Springsteen covers and Devotion originals.  He was ably assisted by Bad Bad Craig and The Dirt on a couple of numbers and he’s given us the following play by play analysis of his set. Click on (some of) the titles for free downloads of selected tunes, recorded live at Mutant Music: Bossanova…

Dancing In The Dark

I ended up singing this in a less gentle style than I had in rehearsals, but sometimes when faced with an audience of (mostly) living, breathing punters the adrenaline kicks in. Anyway possibly my favourite “Boss” song, on first listen to the original you are hit with the upbeat hook on the synthesiser, the big drums, it makes you feel on top of the world, then you listen to the lyrics and it hits you: frustration, loneliness, “I want to change my hair, my clothes, my face” and the possibility of redemption, although it may be just out of reach. Did I mention that I am gay for Springsteen?

You’re Missing

From The Rising, the E-Street band got together after god knows how long (if only there was a giant connected “web” of information that I could search to find this out, oh well) with Bruce for a post 9-11 rumination on mortality and for me, this was it’s undoubted highlight, the way he builds up a heartbreaking picture of loss by listing the things that have not changed after a death, how life goes on, but it’s not ever going to be the same.  Jeez, I’m tearing up here, so err..anyone watch the game?

Don’t Worry Honey We Can Still Be Friends

This is one of my own songs (hey, go me!) did I mention how hard it is to memorise Bruce Springsteen Songs? The guy packs a lot of words in. I mention this because I was feeling pretty good about myself by this point as I had not fecked it all up.  Of course the very moment I feel good about myself I forget the chords to ONE OF MY OWN SONGS.  Sheesh. It only lasts for about a second (ahem) but see if you can pinpoint the second that my bandmate McGarvey will never let me forget.

Everybody Knows That I Like A Good Time

I wrote this song two days before.  Graeme from The Dirt starts handclapping on this song, he did not do that any of the other times we rehearsed. I promptly start laughing, putting off me and everyone else playing on the song. But that’s just the kind of wacky adventures that surround you when you are a rock and roll dude like myself.

Prove It All Night (With The Dirt and Craig from Bad Bad Man)

Back to the Boss, a great job by Jen, G and Craig on backing and mandolin, I have had this arrangement for a while and I was just waiting for the right Boss tribute night to come along.  Thanks Splendid Dead for making my dreams come true! Now can you make my other dream come true, regarding the painful death of Derek Acorah (seriously check out this cunt).

I’m On Fire

A song about lust, I bet Springsteen would be tender, but also make you feel safe in those big old arms of his. Am I right? Errr, anyone watch the game?

Chris Devotion is the Singer/Guitar Slinger in The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The Known Universe - The Elvis Suicide. Buy their critically acclaimed single “Surveying The Young Professionals/If I Don’t Run” at all major download sites, some record stores and at their gigs.

The Baddies played a rather triumphant and surprisingly sober gig at The Duck last Thurs night, twas a ’splendid’ evening! Blood Of The Bull kicked things off, playin a wicked set, first time I’d seen them, def won’t be the last! We were up next, good solid times people, tho our new tune was beautiful but a bit ropey! The magnificent Le Reno Amps closed things off, The Baddies were all fairly goosed by this point but not too much so that they didn’t appreciate the awesomeness of this band! Anyways, download the set if you want, sounds pretty cool, vocals a bit loud cause of the sounddesk but no major bad thing! Good hunting people, goodnight and godspeed!

Lots of love,

The baddest of Bad Bad Men
